Ömer Akman Postal Stationery Collection

When I bought the first Postal Stationery (Antiye) belonging to Ömer Akman, the son of Doctor Medeni Akman, the founder of Burgazada Sanatorium, I did not expect the continuation to come. After one or two, they became a collection on their own in my archive, with eleven in total.

It was a great pleasure for me to meet Kerem Akman, Ömer Akman's grandson, and his brother-in-law, Oğulcan Atakan, who accompanied us on the day I made my last post. I heard interesting stories about the Akman family. In this article, I will only make an introduction with the collectorship of Ömer Akman and convey the main story when we examine the family archive at a later date.

Ömer Medeni Akman studied in England during the World War II years and when he returned home as a Mechanical Engineer, his family gave him the letters he sent to Turkey from there. These letters become the starting point for the collection. In addition, due to the fact that he has a green passport, he travels to many countries and makes pen pals with people he met in the countries he visited. Thanks to pen pals, which was the fashion of that time, card collecting with stamps and stamps became serious.

Antiye: Prepared by the Postal Administration (PTT) to be used in the mail without affixing a stamp; It is the name given to postal materials such as envelopes, cards, papers, tapes (for newspapers and magazines), aerograms, which have pictures or patterns in the appearance of stamps. Stamp-like picture or pattern (indicium), envelope, card, etc. has value in accordance with the postal tariff of the shipment; Suitable for domestic and international tariffs for cards, suitable tariffs that can travel different distances for aerograms, suitable for domestic or registered tariffs for envelopes, etc. In general, antiques can also be purchased from post offices.
